Worked examples
Compare a driving budget with a flight budget
These are fictional USD budgets, not typical prices. One trip means the complete travel needed for one visit. If a parent drives home after drop-off and returns for pickup, count all four legs. If both households drive, include both vehicles without counting a journey twice.
Driving: twelve visits a year
200 total miles × $0.70 per mile = $140 per visit. With no other costs, twelve visits total $1,680 annually. Equal shares are $840 each. If the agreed split uses incomes of $60,000 and $40,000 for the same period, the 60/40 shares are $1,008 and $672.
Flying: four school-break visits
Set vehicle distance or rate to zero if no driving costs apply. Enter $450 in return tickets, $120 in lodging, and $80 in other costs per visit: $650 × four visits = $2,600 annually, or $1,300 each at 50/50. Add escort fares, airport transfers, baggage, and carrier fees where applicable. Confirm current prices directly with the carrier.
What the estimate leaves out
The calculator assumes every visit costs the same. For different summer and holiday fares, calculate each group separately and add the totals. It does not forecast fare increases, convert currencies, value time off work, or decide who legally owes the cost. Changing the currency or distance unit changes the labels, not your entered numbers.

Travel frequency changes the parenting plan
A low ticket price can still create a large annual burden when exchanges happen frequently. Compare the annual cost alongside journey duration, school attendance, the child's age, and who must accompany the child.
Use the result to make the travel term specific: number of trips, booking responsibility, purchase deadline, reimbursement documents, missed-connection rules, and how costs change when fares rise. Then test the actual dates in the custody schedule generator.
