Language models generate plausible text; custody schedules require exact dates, recurrence rules, holiday overrides, overnight totals, and clear exchanges.

What AI is useful for
AI can turn a list of family constraints into questions worth answering:
- Would alternating weeks create too long a gap for this child?

- Which pattern is practical when homes are 45 minutes apart?
- What happens to activities, childcare, and transport?
It can also explain named patterns in plain language or produce a comparison table. That is valuable early in planning, when parents need to narrow a long list of options.
What should not be delegated to a language model
Use deterministic software or direct calendar review for:
- assigning each real date to a parent;
- counting annual overnights and handoffs;
- applying holiday, birthday, and vacation overrides;
- handling leap years and school calendars;
- checking whether two rules overlap;
- preserving the exact schedule in an order.

A better three-stage workflow
Stage 1: describe constraints
List facts without asking AI to decide what is best:
- each child's age and needs;
- school and childcare locations;
- distance between homes;
- each parent's predictable availability;
- activities, health needs, and transport;
- existing orders and safety restrictions;
- holiday and travel requirements.
Minimize personal identifiers when using any AI service. “Child, age 9” is often enough; a full name and school are usually unnecessary.
Stage 2: compare two or three patterns
Ask for tradeoffs, not a verdict. For example:
Compare alternating weeks, 2-2-5-5, and every other weekend for a school-age child. Focus on school-night handoffs, time away from each parent, transport, and recurring activities. Do not make legal claims or invent facts.

Existing orders and safety concerns
AI cannot determine whether parents may change an order informally, what legal standard applies, or whether a schedule is safe. Follow the current order and local process. In matters involving family violence, supervised exchanges, substance misuse, abduction risk, or protective orders, general schedule suggestions may be inappropriate.
Use AI to organize questions for a lawyer, mediator, evaluator, or court self-help service - not to replace them. The best result is a transparent proposal with verified dates and assumptions that a human decision-maker can understand.
